Finally getting around to clearing out the box in the garage or crawlspace in the attic only to find dusty old bottles of dangerous chemicals? At NEDT, we’ve seen our fair share of old household chemicals passed down the generations or from old (very old) hobbies. Today, we’d like to show you some of the kinds of products that pass through our centers, how to locate these products at home, and your disposal options. Enjoy the gallery!
Our Gallery of Old Household Chemicals
At NEDT’s Collection Centers, we get all sorts of household hazardous waste, from the common—such as used paint and motor oil—to the exotic and ancient. Below are a few examples of old household chemicals we’ve accepted at our locations:
Common Sources of Old Chemicals at Home
Whether you’ve generated these chemicals yourself with old hobbies or inherited them from relatives or friends, it can be easy to let these hazardous household products gather dust. Here are some common sources of old chemicals, along with what products you might find:
- Hobbyist Chemicals: From wood or metalworking to chemistry, many hobbies require specialized products, including heavy metals, adhesives, and photography chemicals.
- Products from Another Estate: If you’ve inherited products from a parent’s estate or other older family member, you might also be inheriting hazardous waste.
- Old Cleaning Products: Maybe your last home had a pool and now the products are gathering dust in the garage, alongside old corrosive cleaners like muriatic acid.
- Came with the House: Find some old chemicals in the crawlspaces when you moved in? They may have been overlooked or left behind by the estate agents.
Disposing of Household Hazardous Chemicals
When it comes to disposal, many of these old chemicals cannot be disposed of at home or in the garbage, since they pose a hazard when compacted or handled by personnel, and for treatment plants when poured down the drain.
Thankfully, disposal options are available to you, including our NEDT Collection Centers! We accept many kinds of cleaning chemicals; see our full listing here. Make more of your trip to one of our locations by bringing in any other household hazardous waste (such as old eWaste like CRT monitors) when you drop off, or learn more about our pick-up options. Because household hazardous waste shouldn’t be difficult!
