Happy Earth Day! At NEDT, this is one of the big holidays for us (even though we’re still open today) as we strive to clean up the environment not only for big businesses but for communities and individuals. In celebration of Earth Day 2024, we’d like to talk about a side of our commercial business we haven’t promoted until now—disaster management—and how we’ve helped in the recovery and remediation efforts of the 2023 Newburyport Explosion.
NEDT Disaster Recovery & Management Services
On our NEDTinc.com website which promotes our commercial services, we’ve added a new page: NEDT Disaster Recovery & Management. While we’re more well known as a company that provides hazardous waste transportation and disposal, remediation, and industrial cleaning, all of those—combined with our access to the best contractors and specialists in New England to our long-term working relationship with governmental oversight, means we’re also ready to help with disaster recovery efforts when a business or industrial facility is damaged and needs immediate cleanup to prevent environmental damage.
Cleaning Up the 2023 Newburyport Explosion
One such disaster we’ve had a hand in cleaning up was the 2023 Newburyport Explosion; a fatal explosion at a pharmaceutical contract manufacturer devastated the facility, blowing off the roof and spraying debris as far as 800 feet away. We were called onto the scene to coordinate cleanup efforts, including immediate removal of chemical containers, site remediation, debris removal, and demolition of parts of the plant. By removing hazards and quickly containing and cleaning the site, we ensured that the ecological impact of the explosion on the surrounding residents and sensitive environmental areas was limited.
Earth Day 2024: How You Can Help with Hazardous Waste
While we’re helping businesses, we hope you also can help keep your home safe and help the environment this Earth Day. Here are a few simple ways you can help:
- Read the Labels: Make sure to read the labels of your household products for warnings, proper handling, storage, and disposal options. Read them at the store to make better-informed purchasing decisions.
- Do Proper Disposal: Do your research before pouring a product down the drain or throwing it in the garbage. Know your disposal options and what resources are in your state. Make sure to store products properly to avoid chemical fires.
- Don’t Store Hazardous Waste: If you have products that you can’t easily dispose of, don’t hold on to them! Bring them into one of our stores or contact your local Board of Health for your options. Take our quiz to get a better idea of what hazards you’ve got at home.
